Through first-person testimony filmed in Nepal, Volunteers Needed The Film powerfully reveals The Orphan Trap - the cycle of orphanage trafficking and voluntourism where well-meaning volunteers and donors create demand that funds a multi-billion-dollar industry that commodifies children.
Of the 5,000,000 children living in orphanages it's estimated that a full 80% have at least one living parent. This film shows how the desire to help often separates children from their families.
The screening, brought to you in partnership with Freedom United, on October 28 at the Cantor Film Centre, NYC, will be followed by a Q&A with the Director Barak Laub, Dr Katharine Thompson, founder of the Amani Foundation in Tanzania, and Gina de la Chesnaye, founder of The Nachan Project in Uganda.
